Ustad Noor Bakhsh

Roots Stage is proud to welcome Ustad Noor Bakhsh, one of the most remarkable musicians of Balochistan and a master of the Benju, a keyed zither that has become one of the most distinctive sounds of the Makran Coast. Having played since childhood, Noor Bakhsh has long been celebrated throughout Balochistan as a legendary instrumentalist, though it is only in recent years that his recordings and videos have brought him international recognition. Originally derived from the Japanese taishōkoto, the Benju was adopted and transformed by Balochi musicians into the instrument we know today. Noor Bakhsh's virtuosic playing is deeply rooted in Balochi musical traditions while drawing inspiration from South Asian raags, folk melodies, and the many sounds and cultures that have crossed paths along the coast of Balochistan. For this special concert, Noor Bakhsh will be joined by Doshambay Sabir (Damboora) and Daniyal Ahmed (Damboora, Bansuri). Together they will present a fresh repertoire prepared especially for Roots Stage, featuring traditional Balochi melodies, original compositions, and pieces connected to Noor Bakhsh's personal memories, musical influences, and life journey. His music moves effortlessly between tradition and improvisation, carrying echoes of Balochistan, Sindh, Persia, and the wider Indian Ocean world. Hypnotic rhythms, rich ornamentation, and an unmistakable groove make for a concert experience that is both deeply rooted and surprisingly contemporary. Following the concert, the audience is invited to stay for an informal Q&A session with the artists.
